The Gatehouse charity

The Gatehouse has been supporting Oxford’s homeless community since 1988.

We now offer a wide range of free services and activities to adults aged over 25 who are homeless, vulnerably housed, on low or no income or simply looking for company and community from our drop-in community centre in Woodstock Road.

Services range from a shower project to a free clothing store, access to computers, a variety of hot food and drinks as well as visits from a hairdresser and a podiatry team.

    The challenging winter for homeless

Winter is extremely challenging for homeless individuals. The cold temperatures in the UK can be life-threatening, especially for those without access to proper clothing, shelter, and heating. Prolonged exposure to cold weather can lead to hypothermia and frostbite.

Homeless individuals often lack warm clothing and may not have the means to acquire suitable winter gear.

We, as individuals and as a society, can help in many ways.

    • Donate clothes, shoes and accessories to organisations that support people experiencing homelessness. Many reputable organisations work to provide clothing and other essential resources to homeless people.
    • Raise awareness about the issue of homelessness. Many people are unaware of the challenges that homeless people face, especially during the winter. You can help raise awareness by asking friends and family to join the effort and donate clothes.
    Homeless living under a bridge

Make your first step by decluttering your wardrobe. This means removing any clothes, shoes, accessories, purses and bags you no longer wear, need, fit or want. If you’re not sure whether to donate an item, ask yourself the following questions:

    • Have I worn this in the past year?
    • Does it fit me well?
    • Does it make me feel good when I wear it?
    • Is it in good condition?

If you answered no to any of these questions, it’s time to donate the item.

    Change a life today.

When cleaning your wardrobes, don’t throw items away – DONATE them to be reused!
